forgotten

May you never forget what is worth remembering, nor ever remember what is best forgotten.

I don't know the history behind this old chimney found along the Appalachian Trail between the High Knob Shelter and the Old Cloudland Hotel site on top of Roan Mountain.  Can anyone fill in this bit of lost history for us?

  1. I too, will be eager to learn if anyone knows the story behind this structure!! Each time I go by it, my mind always starts wandering, wondering about the house that used to be connected to this chimney, the occupants, etc!!

  2. I read somewhere once that the structure was a caretaker's cabin for the Cloudland Hotel. Can't find where I found that info though. Beautiful photo, Mark!

  3. I have an anecdotal history of that chimney. Supposedly, according to some Roan Mountain folks, it was a 19th century cabin that ended up abandoned, and then in more recent years (1950's ish) it was occupied by an old hermit that was known for being cranky with "trespassers". It finally just fell apart since then.

There's even a ghost story about it now... spooky!
