My apt was 1001 on the 10th floor, After being there for a month I was nomented to be the naugber watch coordenater. I have gone through the whole intire building to make sure that it is safe for the people who lives there. I know every nick n canny of the building n can go through it with out any power on at all or even blind folded. I have been in the basement of the building, There is a tunnel down there that is boarded up that u can not go through it. Al Capone use to use it to go over to his bank n his club which is called Capone club on main street. Al Capone had stayed in room 805 on the 8th floor n his men had stayed on the 3rd floor that he had with him since he was a ganster. My brother-in-law was the night manger there for 3 1/3 yrs n he knows a lot about the building as well. on the out side of the windows for apt 805 is bars where al capone had stayed in. He had always gotten that room when he had came to JC. My brother-in-law n I no longer live there n have heard from the people that lives there that isn't any better than when we had lived there. it has gone really down hill n the bed bugs is not getting any better in it. its vested with them. John Cevier is not a very good place to live in any more.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05764403273368775210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193288971166646699.post-11285239150549311282014-09-15T14:21:02.023-04:002014-09-15T14:21:02.023-04:00Oops, to add in regards to Al Capone going to the ...Oops, to add in regards to Al Capone going to the Windsor - he stayed at the Sevier (supposedly) but went to the Windsor for the booze, girls and other seedier entertainment. Although it makes a wonderful story, there is no documentation whatsoever, However, it was said/rumored that "if" he did stay there, he went down the street to the Windsor Hotel (now torn down) where the "seedier" customers went.

Now, a bit of further back history. The land that the hotel/apartments is on was once owned by T. A. Faw. He was in competition with Henry Johnson in regards to merchandising. Where Johnson stopped allowing people to come and get water from the creek at his location (due to the water instead being pumped into reserve tanks for the trains), Faw allowed them. Up the hill from the hotel was a school and they used to come down to get their water from Faw's store. When Faw passed away, his daughter Sally inherited the store and land. She later sold it to the developers of the hotel. Here is a link to the Faw property: https://www.flickr.com/photos/archivesofappalachia/4459915991/in/set-72157623680003012

While the hotel was being built, pumps were run 24 hours a day to keep out the water from Buffalo Creek. Later, the creek was "walled in" so to speak so that produce and dairy could be kept cool. (There is also "rumors" of hidden tunnels down there, which the whole basement has since been walled up and nothing remains of the creek or supposed tunnels).

The day the hotel was opened, many businesses were closed to celebrate this grandeur, which was actually the first of three phases for the hotel. Phase 2 and 3 never developed as the stock market crash shortly afterward caused the company to end any further attempts to upgrade the hotel. Here is a picture of the proposed expansion: https://www.flickr.com/photos/archivesofappalachia/4453773713/in/set-72157623546300371

You can also access other pictures through this site of early Johnson City history.Mary Wolfehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02092364782241081907noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9193288971166646699.post-54586460650628636122010-05-15T16:23:48.017-04:002010-05-15T16:23:48.017-04:00Thanks JJ!Thanks JJ!Mark W.
