The Mountain Magnolia Inn is a beautifully restored 1868 Victorian mansion in the quaint mountain village of Hot Springs, NC. Located on 3 1/2 acres, the Inn features lodging and fine dining (dinner only, reservations recommended). The Inn, originally known as Rutland, was the home of Colonel James H. The Grove Park Inn

My first visit to the Grove Park Inn was with my parents twelve years ago -- we were tourists from Illinois lost in the hills surrounding Asheville, NC on a snowy day and came across this magnificent landmark. I have returned dozens of times in the years since. "Built for the ages" the resort opened in 1913 and has hosted eight US presidents and numerous dignitaries (I love looking at the photos that line the hallways of famous visitors over the past 94 years). I've never stayed there but I often take friends and family there after a day of touring Asheville to relax around its mammoth stone fireplaces or take in a sunset and the city views from its back porch (see yesterday's post). Sugar Hollow Retreat

Sugar Hollow Retreat is tucked into the Appalachian wilderness of Carter County, Tennessee, convenient to many outdoor recreational opportunities offered by the Watauga Lake, the Elk River, the Appalachian Trail and the mountains and ski slopes of North Carolina. It sits on 300 beautiful acres with 9 miles of hiking trails and a breathtaking panoramic view of the Watauga Lake. It's comprised of the lodge (right), a conference center, ampitheater, and four elegant, but rustic cottages that are available for rent. It would be the perfect place for business or corporate retreats, family reunions, weddings, youth groups and family vacations.
