thrill > fear

Faster, faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.
--Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) American journalist and author

While photographing the cyclists (see yesterday's post) ETSU student Chris Price zoomed by on his motorcycle and, of course, we tried our best to capture him. He came back to see what we were up to and then was kind enough to make a few more passes while we practiced our 'panning' technique.

This quote reminds me of a time when I was riding down the interstate with Milligan's campus minister, Nathan Flora. We were cruising along at a normal clip when a motorcyclist flew by, recklessly dodging in and out of traffic. Nathan immediately yelled out the window, "LIFE IS PRECIOUS!" Which cracked me up. Most people yell insults or profanity. Not Nathan. He took more of a philosophical approach to the situation...

  1. I saw the "Faster faster" quote on a young man's T-Shirt on the Appalachian Trail years ago. It was the caption for a photo of a game of leap frog . . .
