This monument, located in Winged Deer Park in Johnson City, TN, pays tribute to some of the earliest pioneers to the area. In 1769, Henry and Mary Massengil crossed from North Carolina into the "frontier" known as the Watauga Settlement. This impressive 24 foot statue, created in 1937, faces west to symbolize their westward journey.
