Two words that I'd use to describe Dennis Cove ... "remote" and "beautiful". I guess I could have also used the words ... "no" and "bridges". After parking and walking in a 1/2 mile or so, you reach the first of three creek crossings. These are very challenging in periods of high water. At this time of year, however, it's possible to rock hop (but still not entirely easy) or to simply wade across (which is what I did). The good news is that there's very little elevation gain from the parking area to the falls. After a brief hike following the third crossing, a short, unmarked trail to your right will lead down to the 10' waterfall you see above. For more information, click here. Directions: Hampton, TN is located between cities of Elizabethton and Roan Mountain on Highway 19E. Once in Hampton, turn north onto route 321/67 toward Mountain City. Drive 0.8 miles and turn right immediately in front of the Citizen's Bank onto Dennis Cove Road. Take this incredibly curvy and steep road for about 5 miles. (At 4 miles in, you'll pass by a parking area on your left for the trailhead to Laurel Falls -- soon after that, you'll pass by Laurel Fork Lodge on your left). At 4.6 miles, if you look carefully to your right, you'll see a trail heading up into the woods which leads to Coon Den Falls. At 4.9 miles you'll see a gravel parking area on your left immediately before crossing a single lane bridge which leads to the Dennis Cove Campground. The trailhead is to the right of the bridge and is well-marked.
Hi I am Kairi from Malaysia. Your photographs found my lost feelings. Thanks. Malaysia is a nice place for snapping nature. See you some day.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! I have to thank you, we moved here from MD and would have missed all of the beautiful falls if it had not been for your wonderful blog. It's made the move a bit easier for me - being able to find such beautiful scenery.
ReplyDeleteMark, I was wondering if you have ever hiked the upper section of the Laurel Fork Trail. My friend and I hiked most of the section from Frog Level to Cherry Flats. On our way back we hiked a mile or so back down towards Dennis Cove. I have heard that there is a "Upper Laurel Falls" in this area and we saw at least 2 decent sized waterfalls on this hike. I haven't been able to find a place that mentions these falls or shows any pictures so we can definately say which we saw. The hike was a great hike, but the drive to it is very tough and requires a high clearance vehicle.
ReplyDeleteHi Jarrod, This is one of those hikes on my to-do list! If you go to the falls, please send me a photo - would love to see what I've been missing! Thanks for the note!
ReplyDeleteI took some pictures of both the falls. They're not great, I just took my waterproof digital and took them quickly while we were hiking. How do I send them to you.
ReplyDeleteGreat, you can email them to me markwpeacock [at] yahoo [dot] com. Thanks, Jarrod!
ReplyDeleteIt took some searching, but I've found the name of both those falls. The first one is Upper Laurel Falls (http://www.cs.utk.edu/~dunigan/landforms/m.php?wpt=CTF011) and the falls further up the trail are Campbell Falls (http://www.cs.utk.edu/~dunigan/landforms/m.php?wpt=CTF020)
