Prisoners at Advent

Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in Thee.
--
Charles Wesley (1707-1788), English clergyman, poet, and hymn writer

A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes - and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent.
--Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), German Lutheran Pastor and Theologian. His involvement in a plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler led to his imprisonment and execution at age 39.

Above: St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport, TN. The sanctuary you see above was built in 1987, after the original St. Dominic's was destroyed by fire in 1983. The present church is architecturally amazing. The scale of the structure is perfect -- you feel at once a sense of awe and community. The niche you see above and the beautiful stained glass windows blend traditional and contemporary design. I think the most startlingly beautiful aspect of St. Dominic is the way light filters into the sanctuary. The colors wash across the alter -and fade from cool to warm colors as they climb.

Directions: On I-26 take exit 4-B, at exit light, turn right onto John B. Dennis Highway (Hwy 93), Continue for 6 miles, St. Dominic's will be on your right. Click link above for mass times.
