an open gate

The world is all gates, all opportunities, strings of tension waiting to be struck.
--Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) American Poet and Essayist

This rustic gate is found along the Appalachian Trail on an old farm overlooking the town of Shady Valley, TN. Various barns and sheds are all that are left of the Osborne Farm which was bought in 2001 by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy in order to re-route the AT along the crest of the hillside -- allowing for beautiful views of the valley below and the mountains in the distance.

Directions: From Highway 19E in Elizabethton, TN, take Route 91 (Stoney Creek Road) 18.5 miles to a well-marked parking area on the right side of the road. Cross the road and follow the gentle sloping trail into the pasture. An easy walk with nice views! Click here to see a previous post.

  1. I am enjoying your photographs. Will come back and visit again. Got up early to get my own work done so can't linger too long. These photos are beautiful and refreshing. Thanks.
